The Cabins of Amidon has cabins, public toilets and showers, and it features an underground bunker that is a bar. We were worried that the bar would be noisy, but it was actually not that bad.
Amidon is a really small town. Population: 20
There isn't a lot going on here, but we broke up our drive to spend a few days here. Lots of motorcyclists passing through on their way to the big Sturgis Rally on August 8.
We have full hook-up for our trailer and our Winegard has an excellent connection.
No corrals, but the management let us set up our portable corrals in the empty field next to the campground.
There are no trails to ride out from the campground, so we were a little bummed about that.
The management arranged for us to get this loaner stock trailer so we could trailer out to the Maah Daah Hey Trail.
The trailer is pretty rusty and the electrical wiring is crossed - turn on the left turn signal in the truck, signal lights up on the right on the trailer and vice versa.
But, it is only about 15 miles to the trailhead, so we figured it was OK.
Besides, the only law enforcement in the area is this mannikin sitting in a patrol car across the street from the Court House on the main drag. People driving through town slow down when they see the patrol car, so it is effective.
And, yes, the mannikin is wearing a mask so he is practicing good COVID manners.
The parking area for the trail head is a good size - big enough for us to turn around and park the trailer.
We are the only ones at this part of the trail. This is the Southern end of the Maah Daah Hey Trail.
Maah Daah Hey means "Land That is Eternal".
The trail runs about 144 miles. We only rode a short section of this trail, but we will be picking up other sections when we are at other campgrounds.
A lot of hikers and backpackers walk the Maah Daah Hey. The Forest Service provides caches of water along the trail for the hikers.
It was in the high 80s/low 90s so no hikers around.
Crossing Second Creek - no water in the crrek
There were sections of the trail where it was really narrow, so Ari got off and walked to be safe.
This is our first ride in the Badlands of North Dakota and it was gorgeous.
